Hershey’s chocolate syrup candle

Hmm. If a “tantalizing candle smells so much like the real thing,” which in this case means delicious chocolate, isn’t a bit irresponsible and cruel to have the words “Genuine Chocolate Flavor” printed several times larger than the it’s-not-edible “candle” description below it?

I don’t know about you, but if I follow the scent of warm chocolate that’s been wafting through the house for 65-70 hours (approximate burn time) and see a can of Hershey’s syrup bragging about its scrumptious genuine chocolate flavor, I’m not gonna read the rest of the label. A throat coated with melted candle wax be damned: I’m drinking it.

Available from The Lighter Side beginning January 25 for $11.

BlackBerry 9000 specs updated, this time for the better

We thought the specs were all but set for the upcoming BlackBerry 9000, but according to the latest report they have changed, this time with some extra goodies. Originally the 9000 was set to have just 2.5G EDGE technology which has been upgraded to include UMTS and HSDPA support. In addition to the 3G coverage the operating system is expected to be launched as 4.3.2 with a fast upgrade to the brand new 5.0.0, and when we say fast it really means by the end of the year.

Pricing and availability information have not yet been released, however some expect the announcement to come during the Wireless Enterprise Symposium in May.

Click through for a few more pics of the sleek looking 9000…

CarTorrent: Yes, Exactly What It Sounds Like [P2P]

Most of us have heard about the P2P filesharing network BitTorrent, so when we present the term CarTorrent, you probably already grasp the concept. A UCLA project with big partners like BMW and Toyota, cars communicate through 5.9GHz wireless LAN over ranges of 100-300 meters. During its first implementation—currently project for 2012—the system will communicate navigation info (road/traffic conditions), various media (ads and attractions) and surveillance (data from car cameras, etc for police to comb through later).

The system will run an (optional) $500 premium when it’s unrolled, and obviously, such a system can only be as good as its network. Eventually, CarTorrent could be a whole lot more that a way to share small amounts of information—it could be a way for cars to communicate in times of crisis, allowing car computers to sync in split-second decision territory where individual drives could fail.

Of course, many of us realize what CarTorrent really is: a means for cars to eventually assemble into a giant Megatron and destroy all of mankind (pending oil prices stay in check). [guardianunlimited via digg][image: gettyimages]

Luxury Pooch Gadget: Cool & Hot Comfort Pad

The pet obsession in Japan continues to reach epic levels of absurdity. The latest example of this trend comes from the creators of the Cool&Hot comfort pad for dogs.

As the name indicates, the pad allows your pooch to enjoy soothing cool temperatures in the summer and warm pulses of heat in the winter. This device might not be considered so crazy if it wasn’t for the price: a cool 18,500 yen ($173). For those prices it’s just a matter of time before we see the first K-9 latté drinks rolled out.

Lenovo X300 ultralight laptop leaked specs

Rumors are among us again, this time in the form of a new ultralight laptop from Lenovo. The X300 details are still missing two important items, the release date and the price. The specs however are really nice looking and are said to include a 13.3-inch LED, Intel Merom Santa Rosa Dual Core CPU (2.0 Ghz / 880 Mhz ), 64GB SSD, support for up to 4GB of DDR2 PC2-5300 RAM, a sweet 4 hours of battery life and weighing in at just 2.5 pounds. Overall it sounds like a great package, but if the 64GB SSD is the only option for storage then I would expect a pretty high price tag.

Apple’s MacBook Air Battery Concerns

With Apple’s new baby the MacAir not even launched yet - concerns have been raised over the battery situation already.

As with some other Apple products - the MacBook Air contains a non serviceable 37-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery which raises the question about what happens when it inevitably looses performance?

All laptops gradually kill the battery over time, but thankfully its just a case of snapping in a new battery yourself. Aple have also got a bit of a history with malfunctioning batteries, with a recall/replacement programme for the Macbook & Macbook Pro batteries sold in 2006.

Luckily the battery replacement process is trivial for somebody not scared to use a screw driver. The process requires a single size-0 type philips screwdriver and some patience.

Once flipped upside down, the Macbook Air’s bottom cover is easily unscrewed and removed, providing immediate access to the battery cavity. From there, the battery can be unscrewed from the chassis with the same screwdriver and unplugged from the circuit board with a simple tug — it’s not soldered to the board.

Apple has announced its intent to offer a MacBook Air Out-of-Warranty Battery Replacement Program, which promises authorized replacements for US $129. The return to base repair process normally takes 5 business days, the company says.

There is no word on whether the battery change could invalidate the Apple warranty. So if you’re thinking of doing it later this year, it might be worth checking with AppleCare to be sure.

OSU and DARPA building UAV nano planes that can fit in a pocket

Posted Jan 20th 2008 10:21AM by Paul Miller
Filed under: Transportation
A fancy new miniaturized plasma propulsion system being developed at Oklahoma State University promises some exciting new Unmanned Ariel Vehicle spy plane designs for the folks at DARPA. The engine is about the size of a cigarette, contains no moving parts, and will be build into planes as small as 6-inches long, which soldiers can carry in packs of six or so and deploy as a swarm of inquisitive Daniel Craigs. The planes should be able to manage indoors and urban areas. No word on when these will be spying on a homeland security threat near you, but the project is still in the early stages.
