AT&T to launch Mobile TV in May

AT&T announced it will soon offer mobile television to subscribers. The service, which will be branded “AT&T Mobile TV with FLO,” will be launched in May in partnership with MediFLO USA.

Full-length television shows and sporting events will be offered. Content will be provided from networks and brands, including CBS Mobile, Comedy Central, ESPN Mobile TV, Fox Mobile, MTV, NBC 2GO, and Nickelodeon. AT&T Mobile TV with FLO will be offered on two handsets, including the the LG Vu and the Samsung Access. The company will launch more details about the service at a later date.

Considering that Sprint already offers mobile television, and has been doing so for awhile, it is not too surprising that AT&T has stepped up to the plate to offer the service as well. Mobile television continues to attract more interest from wireless subscribers, and AT&T doesn’t want to lose any subscribers simply because it doesn’t offer the service.

If you ever wanted to try one of Adobe's famed "Photoshop" graphics programs here's your chance to test drive their latest "light" version.

I have several versions of Adobe Photoshop that I got for free with various printers, scanners and other gizmos that have come and gone over the years and I have a full blown Photoshop program as well.

The learning curve is steep, that's for sure, even with some of the simpler versions, but the results are worth the effort.

In any event all digital camera owners will want to manipulate their images to some degree so why not give as many graphics programs as possible a whirl, especially when the cost is zero.

Check out this free Adobe Photoshop Express graphics program and take note of the 2 gigs of free online image storage they're also offering.

Take a camera with you whenever possible, and look around, you'll find a picture somewhere.

Multi-Screwdriver Torch

Now here’s a torch that does more than light up your path whenever the power fails (which isn’t too often these days) - the Multi-Screwdriver Torch. Not only will you be able to find your way through a blanket of darkness, it features a whole host of interchangeable screwdriver heads that will be able to cater for most DIY projects without the need for a whole bunch of different screwdrivers. Just make sure you don’t lose these heads though, as there won’t be any individual replacements. Instead, you’ll have to fork out $17 for a whole new Multi-Screwdriver Torch instead.

Asus encourages software development with Eee PC kit

In a bid to encourage development for its Xandros Linux version of the Eee PC, Asus released a software development kit that is free to download and use.

The kit is available on SourceForge and consists of a 1.2GB disc image containing the following:

  • The Eclipse development environment
  • Qt and Qt 4 plug-in for Eclipse
  • Debian packaging wizard by Xandros
  • Example C and C++ code as well as a range of documentation

Asus has also taken the time to create a supporting PDF user guide that covers how to use the SDK as well as information covering everything from application design to installation methods.

Read more at PC Pro.

Matthew’s Opinion

My first question is whether the company will do a similar SDK for the Windows version of the Eee PC? That would not only be useful for the Asus machine, but also depending on the tools included may act as a good resource for general Windows application development. We will just have to wait and see whether that happens.

As for supporting development with a free SDK, it just goes to show how much Asus cares about the machine and building a community around it. I’m sure owners will take full advantage and start creating new applications that either fill a gap or fix some problems the machine has.

Windows Vista Falls To Hackers. Linux Remains Unbroken

CanSecWest has claimed its second victim. After last week’s pwnage of a MacBook Air, there were two notebook computers left to win by hacking them: one running Widows Vista and one running Ubuntu Linux. The Linux box remained uncracked, but hacker Shane Macaulay successfully compromised a fully patched Vista system using a Flash exploit.

According to The Register, the attack took a good deal longer than Charlie Miller’s two-minute subjugation of the macbook air. Macaulay’s attack was initially neutralized by Windows Vista Service Pack One, but after some more work he and his accomplice Alex Sotirov managed to route around it with a little javascript.

The perpetrators get to keep the Fujitsu U810 and $5,000 as a prize. Might we suggest that the first things they do is to wipe the Windows install and load it up with Hardy Heron.

Palm Centro Going Cheap

The Palm Centro was already highly affordable when released, but Best Buy is offering a killer deal this weekend for AT&T’s Palm Centro, going as low as $40 for new AT&T customers while existing ones can pick it up for a mere $80. If that isn’t low enough already for a device of the Centro’s calibre, I don’t know what is.

Dean Kamen Saves The World. Again

Dean Kamen, creator of the Segway and robotic arms, continues to pop out innovations like Hollywood stars adopt foreign babies. The latest creations are designed for the developing world and deal with the two of the three of life’s essentials: clean water and electricity (the third is, obviously, free WiFi).

The Slingshot is a water purifier which uses vapor compression distillation to pull water out of anything remotely wet. It does this using just 2% of the power of alternatives, and can supply 1,000 liters of fresh water a day from nothing more than ditchwater and piss.

The companion power generator is equally scatological, and will runs on anything that burns, including cow dung. Again, high efficiency is the name of the game, and Kamen’s generator is based on a Stirling Engine, one of the most efficient around, and in this case produces a constant output of one Kilowatt, enough to power 70 light bulbs or one high-end gaming PC.

GPS To Track Felons

South Korean police are currently trying to push for a plan that will see all cell phones come with an embedded GPS chip of some sort, enabling satellites to track all these users. While the benefits of it nabbing those involved in kidnapping and other crimes against women and children are there, must it come at the expense of privacy for the average Joe? I think this plan will probably fall through as most, if not all people will go against it while the prices of cell phones will rise as well due to the added technology.

Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock

Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock
This ultimate failsafe alarm for serial oversleepers produces an ear-splitting, banshee-wailing, earth-shattering 113db of white noise. In short, louder than a helicopter hovering just above one’s bedroom ceiling. Golly.
