Panasonic’s RP-HJE900 earbuds sport detachable cables and fake diamonds

by Tim Stevens, posted May 27th 2008 at 9:26AM
Cubic zirconia is the bane of would-be brides with cheap beaus worldwide, but did you know it’s also a miracle cure for sound distortion? Panasonic would like you to think so, it’s touting the material’s distortion-reducing qualities in the new RP-HJE900 earbuds, which offer a sensitivity of 100dB/mW and a claimed frequency response of 6Hz to 28KHz. The buds are also detachable, since you don’t want to shell out a few hundred dollars only to have ‘em destroyed by a cable snag. No word on price, but they’ll surely cost less than the real thing.

Artist Says He Used GPS, DHL to Create ‘Biggest Drawing in the World’

Swedish artist Erik Nordenenkar claims to have created the "biggest drawing in the world" by sending a GPS-equipped plastic briefcase on a squiggly, looping trip around the world, tracing out a 110,664-km (68,763-mile) unbroken line with the help of DHL delivery planes and trucks. The result: A self-portrait of the artist as a megalomaniacal god with a planet-sized Sharpie and a rather nice sense of line.

Problem is, the project is almost certainly faked, despite the footage showing the briefcase disappearing into the cargo hold of a DHL plane and a photo showing a stack of delivery receipts at the end. Why?

  • DHL does not deliver to arbitrary latitude-longitude destinations.
  • DHL is not likely to consider "trace a few looping lines through the Indian Ocean, without landing" as a valid delivery request, even with lat-long coordinates
  • You can’t get a GPS signal inside the aluminum skin of an airliner
  • No GPS system, even with supplemental batteries, would have lasted the 55 days the artist says his project took
  • Details on the setup’s "extended tracklog and battery time" are suspiciously absent.

So yeah, we’re calling bullshit on this one. Nice picture, though.

As it is commonly seen wherever we go now a days, we find almost everyone use his or her mobile phones or other such devices to send their text messages digitally. This is especially true in case of the teenagers, who use their cell phones expertly. However, other people are not as comfortable or as skilled in using their cell phones like these teenagers.

For these people, sending a digital text message can become much easier if they use a compatible keyboard to comfortably type their text messages. Orange France calling iPhone users with offers of subsidized 3G upgrades?

by Joshua Fruhlinger, posted May 27th 2008 at 11:47AM
When it comes to subsidy rumors for Apple’s 3G iphone, some are more believable than others. In this case, we’ll leave the likelihood judgments up to you. Readers of French tech site PCInpact say that they are getting calls from Orange with offers of an upgrade to the upcoming Apple wonderphone. For only 50€, readers say they have been told they can swap out their current-gen iPhone for the new one. Or, say the French, the upgrade will be offered at a “generous” discount. With Orange’s recent 3G iPhone distro deal in the books, we had to give this rumor some airtime. Either way, this could mean everything — or absolutely nothing — for those of you residing stateside and looking to bump your iPhone this summer.

Canon 5D Mark II Coming Soon?

Word on the street has it that the Canon 5D Mark II will soon make a debut on the marketplace, leaving us with yet another DSLR to choose from whenever the itch to get a new camera strikes. Why do we say so? Well, Amazon is already carrying the Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital Field Guide which probably means the camera itself is on the way as well. After all, why write a field guide on vaporware? November would be a good time to tell whether the Canon 5D Mark II will actually make it or not.

Philips Breeze Headset

Trawling the FCC often yields some gems, and the Philips Breeze headset is one of them - in a literal sense, of course. While no real diamonds can be found on the Breeze, it uses a (much) cheaper alternative that is famous world over, known as Swarovski crystals. This Bluetooth-enabled headset was specially deisgned by women and for women, although I can forsee a fair bit of men itching the get their hands on one for that added bling factor. No idea how much this will cost when it is released, but one thing’s for sure - this could be one of the greasiest Swarovski-laden device in the market.

Sony unveils new MicroVault Click range

Sony has a new range of USB flash drives that will definitely appeal to those who love colors and absolutely adore the idea of merging both form and functionality in whatever device they use. Dubbed the new MicroVault Click, this spanking new range will come in a wide range of colors that will put a rainbow to shame, featuring storage space of up to 16GB along with a maximum read transfer speed of 31MB/s which ought to be more than enough for casual, everyday use at the office. Performance buffs can move aside, since there are always other speedier solutions which you can rely on such as a high end portable hard drive if you happen to want to store and carry your important information wherever you go.

Not only does the new MicroVault Click range feature advanced performance and increased storage capacity for today’s memory hungry world, you also get high speed data transfer rates as well as Windows ReadyBoost compatibility that supposedly improves PC memory performance on Windows Vista without the need to install additional RAM. Take my word for it - nothing works better than throwing in an extra stick (or two) of RAM into your PC/notebook if you want a quick performance boost, especially for folks who tend to indulge themselves with large files while at work.

You must be wondering where the ‘Click’ part of the naming convention comes in - well, according to Sony both the MicroVault Click and Click Excellence ranges feature a neat ‘click’ design that uncover and retract the USB connector for convenient use, doing away with the risk of accidentally losing your USB flash drive cover simultaneously. You get write speeds of up to 11MB/s, making data transfer a snap via USB 2.0 connectivity. This new range is blessed with a 5-year European warranty, Whatever happens to those of us living across the pond?
