42TB of external storage, clearly not for the average geek

Sans Digital just released a storage system named AccuRAID AR442F4 that is aimed at datacenters. With its 42 bays, it can host 42TB of storage and supports RAID 6, if you’re really paranoid about hardware failure. Of course, the drives are hot-swappable and all. Don’t expect a USB or eSATA port, as this monster uses a Fibre Channel interface to provide the needed bandwidth. Oh, and it costs $25,000.

New version of Roxio Creator now available

Roxio has announced the launch of their latest version of Roxio Creator. Roxio Creator 2009 is a suite of tools for photo, video and music authoring. The application also includes tools to burn music, video, and data discs.

The new version includes advanced support for High Definition (HD) video and a redesigned product launcher which makes getting access to the tools you need easier. If you like to transfer media to mobile devices you will also appreciate the SyncIt feature which automatically converts digital files to the preferred format for a mobile device. Encoding of video has also been improved since the application will be able to take advantage of new multi-core processors.

Roxio Creator 2009 is currently available at the Roxio website and will retail for US$99.99. The software is expected to be available in retail stores worldwide next month. One important thing to note is that the High-Def/Blu-ray Disc plug-in for the software will be available as a downloadble component through the Roxio website for US$29.99. If you want the component free then you simply need to purchase Roxio Creator 2009 from through the Roxio website by September 30th.

Brian’s Opinion

I’ve been a big fan of Roxio Creator for awhile. Typically there’s a stripped down version of the software on new computers you buy. Of course, all the bells and whistles are in the full version. I’m sure Roxio’s hope is to wet your apetite enough to buy the full blown version of Creator.

Roxio Creator 2009 takes into account that we live in a High-Def/Blu-ray Disc era. Now, I’m not a big fan that the company charges an additional US$29.99 fee for a downloadable component. Still, at least Roxio is giving people the chance to get the component for free through their website promotion.

Computers have become the media center of the home. The good news for Roxio is that means that applications like Roxio Creator 2009 are in high demand. As we continue to hook up cable and satellite programming to our computers and load them full of music and video our need for applications like Roxio Creator 2009 to do more will expand as well.

Navigon intros the 7200T, shows off 3D signage and landmarks

by Joshua Topolsky, posted Aug 26th 2008 at 8:48AM
Navigon has just dropped it’s latest satnav baby on us — the 7200T — and it comes with an extra side of slick… like, gooey slick. Upping it’s game a touch, the device sports a redesigned OS which incorporates real-time traffic updates (free of charge over FM via Clear Channel’s Total Traffic Network) as well as “Reality View Pro” and and “Landmark View 3D,” the former designed to whip up some photo-realistic 3D signage when you need to make a move, and the latter aimed at helping you notice the little things in life… like the Chrysler building. The unit features a 4.3-inch, 16:9 touchscreen display, 2GB of flash storage, a SiRF GRF3i+ GPS chip, microSD card support, 64MB of RAM, and it all runs atop a Centrality Titan I 600MHz CPU. The 7200T is slated for an October release, and will clock in at $449.

Take a look at these really cool Wii-mote concepts

As a rule, I usually stay away from concepts that I see online. They’re great and everything but they’re just flashy pictures with no technological merit or real-world application. Every once in a while, though, one comes across that really stands out. These images fall in to that category.

As you can see, these are mock-ups of Wii remotes and accessories. Modding controllers is nothing new, and there are endless ways to simply decorate your controllers; but these really shine on their own for their grace and simplicity. The wood grain on off-black is highlighted by LED lights, cleverly inserted inside the controller. It simply looks cool. The image came from Flickr user “Joe D!” and his Flickr page is a pretty impressive body of work. Apparently, he really likes to draw mustaches and glasses on dollar bills (I’m particularly fond of Tron Lincoln).

If you’ll remember back when the Wii was first announced, there were quite a few colors being shopped around. We were supposed to be able to purchase our Wiis in a wide array of colors. Since then, none of that has happened. It’s all white, all the time. Sure, last week, Nintendo released a few different colored wrist straps, but what self-respecting man would use the pastel pink or green wrist straps currently being offered? Here’s hoping that Nintendo starts offering some other options (or just buy Joe D!’s images and run with them).

iPod Nano Mock-up Makes Kevin Rose Look Less Goofy

If there’s one thing we all learned (again) from the recent Bigfoot fiasco, it’s that if people leak blurry, crappy looking photos as evidence, they’re probably fake — especially given the superb quality of digital cameras these days. With that logic, Kevin Rose’s photo of a purported revision of the iPod nano looks crappily unrealistic, too.

But doing Rose a favor, Miguel Suarez has produced a pretty impressive mock-up that would serve Apple’s design team justice. Take a look at it — ooo. And compare it to the pic Rose provided — bleh. If Rose’s pic is real, hopefully Suarez is spot on with his mock-up. Although I’m fairly certain the clickwheel wouldn’t rotate if you turned the ipod nano sideways…

Navigon announces new 7200T GPS with 4.3-inch display

Navigon has recently shown off their new GPS, the 7200T. In efforts to make this their best GPS thus far, they have added a few new features including a revamped OS.

Within the new OS comes real time traffic updates, Reality View Pro, and Landmark View 3D. The traffic updates are free using the FM tuner tuned to Clear Channel’s Total Traffic Network. Usually, real time traffic updates cost monthly subscriptions. The other cool feature is the Landmark View 3D, which shows a 3D view of landmarks in the area. In addition, the 7200T sports the aforementioned 4.3-inch touchscreen, with a 16:9 display, 2GB of internal storage, SiRF GRF3i+GPS chip, microSD expansion, 64MB of RAM, and running on a Centrality Titan I 600MHz processor.

The Navigon 7200T is set to be available in October, retailing for $449.

Solar spy plane sets unofficial 82 hour flight record

The current world record for an unmanned flight stands at just over 30 hours and was set by the Northrop Grumman’s RQ-4 Global Hawk. But that record has unofficially been smashed by a new aircraft developed by QinetiQ.

The QinetiQ Zephyr Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) managed a flight time of 82 hours and 37 minutes soaring over the U.S. Army’s Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona. The flight was done to test a communications payload and did not meet the criteria to be classed as an official world record.

The Zephyr weighs just 30kg due to its carbon fibre frame, and is capable of carrying up to 2kg of cargo. To launch, it is held by 3 people and they run to gain speed before releasing the craft. When in flight it can be controlled via satellite communication or be set to run on autopilot.

The UAV is powered via solar energy and a rechargeable battery. The wings of the Zephyr have a layer of amorphous silicon solar arrays that provide the required energy and recharge the battery. The battery is present to allow the UAV to continue flight through the night.

Simon Bennett, managing director of QinetiQ’s Applied Technologies commented:

The Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona was an appropriate setting for Zephyr’s world beating flight as many landmark aviation developments have taken place there in recent years. In addition to setting a new unofficial record, the trial is a step towards the delivery of Zephyr’s capability for joint, real-time, battlefield persistent surveillance and communications to forces in the field at the earliest opportunity.

Matthew’s Opinion
The designers think this is just the start and those long hours will soon turn into months with a bit more development. That means we will have the capability of launching UAVs that could potentially provide commercial services as well as acting in a military capacity.

The technology should also be looked at by the aviation industry for commercial flights. Covering the wings and upper fuselage of commercial aircraft with the same solar arrays would surely produce a significant amount of energy to power on-board gadgets. The only question would be as to how resilient the arrays are to the elements and the constant take-off, fly, land, routine of these planes.

Review: Soul Calibur 4 for PS3

There is just something about playing Soul Calibur that makes me extremely nostalgic for the Dreamcast. Call me crazy, but there’s just something about the experience that makes me fondly recall my initial introduction to the series there. Perhaps it is how wonderfully true to the series each iteration is, while managing to introduce elements that heighten the experience without deviating too far from the core design that has made it so popular and beloved.

This release is no different in that regard, bringing the same gameplay mechanics and design Soul Calibur players have come to expect, while laying on even more gorgeous graphics that are also a trademark of the series.

Of the slight additions to the gameplay mechanics, the critical finish feature is by far the biggest and most impactful on the battles. This system penalizes players who tend to constantly focus on defense by instilling a gauge that fills as they continue to block. Opponents who fill the gauge can unleash a supermove on their opponent, making overkill blocking an extreme penalty. This has the refreshing effect of keeping battles offensive-minded and exciting.

The other big addition, obviously, are the Star Wars characters. As this is a review of the PS3 version of the game, I have to say I was extremely disappointed in Vader. He is slow, clunky and simply does not transition well from move-to-move or combo-to-combo. Soul Calibur masters will likely be able to get the most out of him and perform well despite his limitations, but novices to the series will be extremely frustrated playing the Sith master. The Apprentice character from the upcoming Force Unleashed release, however, is simply awesome in execution. Fights between him and Vader are especially gorgeous with the way the sabers play off of each other visually during blocks and counters.

Luckily for PS3 owners, Dale Nardozzi, Senior Editor of TeamXbox.com, has confirmed that Yoda will eventually be available for download on the PS3 version. Vader, likewise, will also eventually be available for download on the 360.

While I found the level design to be a little sub-par compared to previous installments, the graphics and animation have certainly been taken to a new level and absolutely shine with polish and brilliance. To be sure, this is among the best looking graphical presentations I have ever seen, especially in the lighting and level of detail.

A long awaited online mode is here, something that fans have been begging to get for ages. Of course, the typical story, arcade, and new “Tower of Lost Souls” mode (which unlocks new rewards) are also here. Story mode was a letdown, as it is far too easy and far too short. Then again, players don’t buy fighting games for story and progression, they buy them for the solidity of the one-on-one gameplay, so it is far from a salient complaint on the game. The create-a-character mode is fantastically deep, and adds a significant amount of hours to the total package, allowing customization of fighting style, voice, equipment and so on.

While I may prefer other fighting games on pure gameplay, the mechanics of SC are fun and polished; and definitely provide a solid and enjoyable experience. Gripes are small and rare here, and this is obviously a must-have title… especially given the weak library of the PS3.

AT&T Tilt gets Windows Mobile 6.1

HTC has sent word that it’s now making a software ROM upgrade available on its website that will bring Windows Mobile 6.1 to the AT&T Tilt. Along with the upgrade Tilt users will now have access to the HTC Home Screen, Video Share Calling, Threaded SMS, MS Voice Command, OneNote Mobile, Remote Desktop Monitor, Enroll Domain, Managed Programs, and more.

It’s about time the update rolled out. One thing that has really become apparent is how long it takes to get upgrades out the door for phones nowadays. Of course, Apple is making it more obvious how long everyone else takes since it seems to spit out an update every couple of weeks lately.

Windows Mobile 6.1 is a nice upgrade especially since some of the often missed features include optimization of the OS for improved battery life, stability, and responsiveness.
