Light-up Punching Bag Is Like a Mood Ring For Your Fists

Fight the power.

Stefan Gross’s bag is as emo as the person punching it. Close your eyes and imagine that guy who’s dating your ex-girlfriend now, and if you hit the bag hard enough it’ll change from dark red to bright red to yellow to white. Hyah! Grrrrrr. Urgh! (Sob.)

Documenting The Steampunk Generation

At Wired.com we have often written about the Steampunk subculture that reimagines many of today’s objects and technologies with a 19th century Victorian aesthetic creating a retro-futuristic feel. That means mechanical computers and steam powered robots among other things.

IEEE’s Spectrum magazine’s latest issue has an article looking at some of the major figures in the Steampunk movement including Sean Slattery or Jake Von Slatt, I‑Wei Huang, known as Crab Fu, and Richard Nagy or Datamancer.

There’s also an amazing slideshow featuring many of the Steampunk contraptions.

The question for the movement is whether it can "remain true to its DIY principles" and yet grow or will it slowly fade away," says the article. What do you think?

Alphascan J2290D Crystal LCD Monitor

If you want to pick up a pre-bling (I’m not too sure if there’s such a term, but hey - you heard it here first) LCD monitor, look no further than Alphascan’s J2290D Crystal LCD monitor. Apart from its rather girlish charms, it does pack quite a punch in the performance department with a contrast ratio of 12,000:1 and a 2ms response time. No idea how much you have to fork out to own a lcd monitor adorned with 97 Swarovski crystals though.

Aurora Lights Up The Way

Fires tend to cut off all power in a building, leaving firefighters at a disadvantage with little light to see through the flames. Enter the Aurora hose nozzle concept that features an internal turbine which in turn powers eight LEDs that will light up to refract off the water stream, effectively illuminating the immediate area that makes the firefighter’s job all the more easy. No idea if this concept from Duck Image Studio will ever take off, but it is worth considering since lives are at stake here.

.Me proves to be very popular, auction reaches $218,000

About a week ago, there was an announcement that there would be an auction in NYC, called the T.R.A.F.F.I.C auction, auctioning off the rights to a few “.me” domains.  Right now, most domains end in .com, .org., or .edu.

I didn’t think that having .me at the end of a URL would fetch so much money at an auction.  However, there have been a lot of clever URL names incorporating .me. Take a look below to see which domains sold for the highest at the auction.

The highest-priced domain sold was “Date.Me” which sold for $70,000.  As you can imagine, this site will probably be another online dating service.  The next was “Love.Me” which sold for $32,500.  Again, this is probably another online dating service.  Next, we have “Kiss.Me” which sold for $20,000.  That’s right—another dating service.

“Buy.Me” came in at $17,500; expect an online store selling a variety of things.  The next few include “Loan.Me” for $15,000, “Marry.Me” for $12,000, “Show.Me” for $10,000, and “Watch.Me” and “Play.Me” sold for the same price - $7,500.  Last but not least, “Rent.Me” sold for $6,000.  All of these domains totaled about $218,000; people must really like their .Me.

Predrag Lesic, the registry’s executive director, was especially proud with the way the auction went:

“We are thrilled with the success of dot-ME. The buzz was tremendous during the auction. Clearly the TLD [Top Level Domain] is connecting with people in a big way.”

If you want to buy a “.Me” domain, then head here to purchase one.  If you do, let us know what domain you purchased.

Blood bag cell phone strap is just what the doc ordered

What is the one thing that you should always carry with you in case of an emergency? A bottle of your own blood, of course!

Of course not. What we’re suggesting here is something lighter - the idea of carrying a bag of blood-like liquid with your blood type printed boldly on it. And you wear the Blood Drip Cellphone Strap on your cell phone or other small gadget. If you live in Japan, where some believe that your blood type is indicative of your personality, this cell phone strap can signal a subtle hint regarding your character to someone you’re trying to impress.

According to this belief about a blood group-personality connection, my worst traits are that I am critical and indecisive. Well shut your face will you, I am confused about whether to buy this cell phone strap or not. For the rest of you folks, it’s available from Strapya World for $5.82.

Plantronics Tries to Patent Nod Powered Headset

Wireless headsets are convenient but having to charge them regularly is not. Headset manufacturer Plantronics agrees.

The company has filed for an interesting patent for a headset that will be powered through movement of the head.

That includes "subtle nods, turns and shaking," as well as physical activity such as "walking, running, climbing stairs, riding in a vehicle, riding a horse, riding a bicycle, scooter, skateboard, skiing and climbing a mountain."

According to the patent, the headset would comprise a processor, an acoustic transducer, and a kinetic energy converter coupled to a power cell for powering the headset.

The patent application explains that the motion of the head drives the micro-movements of a movable element such as a rotor or flywheel with respect to a conductor such as a coiled wire or trace array.

This induces an electromotive force (EMF)  or voltage, which is used to charge a power cell that supplies power to the headset.

Even when the headset is not worn, the movement and vibration of it in a purse or a vehicle would contribute to its charging ability, says the application.

The patent was filed in late 2007 but was published last month.

Now you might want to start practicing your head bob.
